The new Massachusetts law mandating health insurance for all requires enrollment in one of seven private insurance plan. The noble effort for coverage for the state’s uninsured has come under fire from Consumer Watch Dog for its staggering costs. One feature called co-insurance (not the prefixed co-pay) requires consumers to pay up to one-third of hospital costs, and other features include caps for hospitalization, caps for out-of-pocket costs set at $10,000 for a family of four, and premiums in excess of $2,000 a month, with co-pays depending on the company. The law takes effect on July 1 and people with a mental illness should scrutinize the plan’s benefits carefully.
