Psychiatrist Sally Satel, resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, blasts SAMHSA for, among other things, its recovery focus, calling it a “one-size-fits-all fantasy.” To argue her point, Satel invokes the tragic death of Kendra Webdale, but she omits facts about the assailant’s pursuit of treatment. Knowing her dogged promotion of outpatient commitment, and in the shadow of Virginia Tech, one wonders what she’s got in mind by saying, “There has been murmuring on Capitol Hill of forthcoming proposals to better equip state mental health systems to manage the severely mentally ill.”
