A place to learn what others work on and how to gain access to the information.

  • Alliance for Health Reform
A non-partisan, and not-for-profit, the Alliance for Health Reform provides forums for discussing health reform (such as insurance, costs of biotechnology, patient safety) to which it invites legislators and makes available resources for journalists. This links to a chapter on mental health in its 2006 edition of Covering Health Issues.
  • Alliance for Human Research Protection
A group dedicated to maintaining the dignity and human rights of research subjects, and publicizing studies, lapses, or disregard for human subjects. Providing accurate and responsible informed consent is one of their main objectives.
  • Amedeo
A free guide to professional medical and psychiatric journals. While the guide is free, registration is required. And some of the journals may require a fee.
  • Health News Review
This site comes from the University of Minnesota's department of Health Journalism with the intent of helping a lay person evaluate and understand news stories about medical treatments, research findings, new devices or medical tests. It contains a check list for what to look for, and key terms that often appear without explanation.
  • NARSAD
An organization dedicated to research into the major mental illnesses, and to promoting young professionals in the early stages of their careers. Their annual awards are keenly sought and NARSAD awards have spurred research that had for decades been underfunded.
  • Open Access Journal Articles
Since 2004 this non-profit has been listing peer-reviewed, medical articles periodically. It has a useful and sophisticated search engine and covers broad aspects of mental illness internationally. It is free.
  • Schizophrenia Bulletin
Dedicated to all aspects of schizophrenia research, Oxford University Press publishes this peer-reviewed journal edited by national experts.
  • Schizophrenia Research Forum
With a focus on schizophrenia, this site promotes on-line conversations between researchers and scientists worldwide. Dialogue has included lay participants. It is underwritten by NARSAD and the National Institutes of Health, and provides a unique feature where discussants have a biographical profile including their professional work, interests and disclosures.
