A partial list of support groups. If you don't see what you need here, consult Advocacy organizations.


  • Active Minds
    A student run organization serving education and advocacy around mental illness, and as a liason between college students and mental health resources. Founded at the University of Pennsylvania in 2001, six years later 19 schools had organized chapters.
  • Anxiety Disorders Association of America
    Information about the range of anxiety disorders - post traumatic stress, panic disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders and phobias including agoraphobia - along with contacts for continuing education and upcoming conferences.
  • CHADD
    Founded in 1987 for parents whose children had ADD or ADHD, it now includes adults as part of its mission. A comprehensive organization with local chapters, on-line, and print resources for information, networking and advocacy. A very good place to start.
  • Child and Adolescent Bipolar Foundation
    A parent-led membership organization in Illinois with a newsletter, and information about diagnosis, treatment, education. On-line chat rooms and support groups.

  • Depression and Bipolar support Alliance
    A national organization with local chapters and this site contains information about mood disorders, support groups and medication.
  • Harbor of Refuge
    An on-line, volunteer, and peer support site with a monitored chat room for consumers and relatives of people with bipolar disorder.
  • Moodswing
    This web site is managed by families or consumers of people with bipolar disorder. Chat room participation requires registration, but reading room does not, and the site disseminates timely research and resources.

  • Obsessive Compulsive Foundation
    The Obsessive Compulsive Foundation promotes internaitonal education and supports research into OCD. A good site to learn about providers, treatment programs or studies of particular types of OCD.
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
    Post traumatic stress develops in response to trauma. It afflicts all ages, can be found in children and adults, and received renewed attention as among soldiers engaged in combat.
  • Schizophrenia.com
    An interactive, moderated site devoted to schizophrenia with news, general information, archives and links to blogs. It is run by volunteers and consumers in consultation with professionals.


  • Schizophrenics Anonymous
    A consumer, self-help organization started in Detroit that has grown to include international chapters in countries such as Brazil, Australia, India, Venezuela.
