Anticipating combat needs of soldiers

  • Psychiatry Weekly concludes a two-part series with Naval Captain Robert A. Alonso about improvements in services addressing combat trauma and frequent redeployments. Initiatives include embedding mental health practitioners on the front lines, special programs for returning soldiers, training commanding officers, and using natural support systems made up of other soldiers.
  • The Providence Journal reports Rep. Patrick Kennedy's (D-RI) calls for the Psychological Kevlar Act to anticipate PTSD and provide preventive training.
  • The Washington Post reports the army is initiating a program called "chain-teaching" to teach soldiers to spot signs of PTSD.
