Data from a National Survey of Drug Uses and Health indicate that depression varies across gender, age and occupation. Of the people aged 18-64 who experienced major depressive episodes between 2004-2006, the greatest number (10.8 percent) came from workers in personal care and service occupations. The highest rate among female workers (14.8) came from those employed in food preparation; and for those 26-34, the highest rate (13.5) came from people working in arts, design, entertainment, sports and media. Between $30 billion and $44 billion lost in productivity each year is attributed to depression, and women generally report higher rates than men.
