A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) indicates Viagra may ease sexual dysfunction, a side effect for women taking SSRI anti-depressants. The study was conducted over three years, and employed numerous outcome measures including interviews, blood tests, and rating scales.
The 8-week placebo-controlled clinical trial (N=98) was financed by Pfizer, according to the federal clinical trial registry. Of the six collaborators, including the lead author Dr. George Nurnberg, only one did not receive outside consulting work with Pfizer. Viagra's sales reached $1.76 billion in 2007, according to Bloomberg.com, and expanding that market to include 70 percent of the women taking antidepressants could boost sales considerably.
