Congress is wasting no time in setting its health reform agenda or letting letting President-Elect Obama know its priorities. In the Senate, Montana's Max Baucus, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, is spearheading a substantial project, including a comprehensive report calling for widespread reform of health care: "The link between health care costs and the economy is undeniable. Reforming the health care system is essential to restoring America's overall economy and the financial security of our working families."
Dingell to Obama
Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich) has written an open letter with specifics that have an impact for people with a mental illness or substance use disorder:
- universal coverage;
- long-term services enabling people with disabilities to remain in their homes and communities;
- robust re-authorizaiton of SCHIP.
At stake is more than a philosophical discussion about the role of government in the market place. Forty-six million Americans have no insurance, emergency room costs are skyrocketing, states are trimming programs and services for the most vulnerable, and billions of dollars are lost annually as a result of unproductive workers and sick days.
