Increased funding for Nicola Law; decreased in-patient beds in New Orleans...hmmmn...is this a disconnect? "Those vicious, atrocious, mental patients need to be off the streets, so our FAMILIES, can rest well at night." View the videos and see what the New Orleans police spokesperson, & Bobby Jindal, LA. Governor, etc. have to say about we who are mentally ill.

Much is made of that horrible 'paranoid schizophrenic' who committed the 'atrocious' or horrible 'crime'. What is not being said, what has never been said is that after 'Cane Katrina, there were no in-patient beds available, no medications, no 'psychiatric treatment', so many patients did not receive treatment or assistance needed to cope with the trauma of the hurricane. Now three years later, when the Gov. wants to crunch numbers and alleviate the financial problems, many in-patient beds are being cut in New Orleans. Now due to the knee jerk reaction we have the Nicola Law, equivalent to Kendra's Law.

I get tried of preaching the same old, same old. I sometimes wonder why I have spent almost 25 years of my life, dedicated to mental health advocacy and see such negative results that many years since the inception of my advocacy.

I am a Person on the road to Recovery from Mental Illness. What I have heard about Nicola’s Law I feel like I would be locked up if for any reason that someone feels I’ve done wrong. I have never broken the law. I’ve only tried to hurt myself because I was very sick at the time and was not on medication. I am now on the correct medication and am a working Consumer Liaison and Peer Specialist job I will start on Feb. 10,2009. I am looking forward to start the Peer Specialist job on Feb. 10,2009.
I am a contributing member of society and I don’t think anyone should be able to throw me into a mental Hospital. I think my family would stand by me in this also.
