After suicide, cancer is the second leading cause of death for people with schizophrenia, noted authors of a French study that followed 3,470 people for 11 years. Of them, 4.2 percent died from suicide, 2.2 percent from cancer and 2.0 percent from cardiovascular diseases. Smoking is a factor since the leading cause of cancer deaths for men was lung cancer at nearly twice the rate as for the general population and smokers, and men in the study consumed more tobacco products than men in the French population.
