"Behavioral health services are often the first place cuts in coverage are made," said Mental Health America's CEO, David Shern. Shern testified before the health subcommittee of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Highlights of his testimony include recommendations for a behavioral health specialist on team with primary care providers, lifting restrictions against pre-existing conditions, and interventions for prevention of disorders which are often symptomatic before the age of 14. Shern repeated the conclusion of the President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health that "mental health care in this country is in shambles."
