Research published in the current issue of Nature offers a clue to the genetic puzzle of schizophrenia. The International Schizophrenia Consortium studied people from Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Their results point toward common variants of genetic susceptibility associated with infection, autoimmune processes, and modification of genetic material associated with schizophrenia. Some of the same gene is associated with bipolar disorder. Dr. Tom Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, tells NPR schizophrenia genes are the "Bermuda Triangle" of human genomes," because of the many illnesses with which it is associated.
