The military is preparing soldiers to anticipate the mental health impact of combat and multiple deployments, writes Benedict Carey of the New York Times. Estimates run as high as one in five soldiers returning with trauma-related conditions (PTSD, depression, anxiety disorders) and a spike in attempts as well as completed suicides. Introducing roll-playing for emotional coping mechanisms represents a culture shift. Perhaps it is a tacit acknowledgment that research about prevention may have broad applicability.
