David Oaks, founder of Mind Freedom International, was named one of Utne Reader's 50 visionaries changing the world. Oaks has been a leader in calling attention to violations of civil rights of people with a mental illness and promoting recovery with pride. Others named by Utne Reader for their work include Christian Olson, a leader in children's health; Rana Husseini a journalist exposing honor killings in Jordan; Brewster Kahle, who is digitally archiving historical documents; Brian Conley a photojournalist who documents life under war-time seige.

Among the recent campaigns Mind Freedom has undertaken to publicize on-going abuse is the recent documentation of circumstances around the death of a patient in the Oregon State Hospital.
