The three departments charged with writing regulations providing guidance for the implementation of Wellstone-Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act missed the Oct. 3 deadline, a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services told MIWatch. Explanations for missing the deadline include the complexity of three federal agencies working together plus the number of comments (more than 400) from interested parties.Last month 72 members of the House of Representatives urged Secs. Sebilius (HHS), Geithner (Treasury) and Solis (Labor) to move quickly to guarantee the regulations become the benchmark for national health reform. Oct. 3 was the date written into the bill, also the one year anniversary of the Senate's vote. It is expected the regulations will be completed before the law goes into effect next January.
