Sexual abuse during childhood is a risk factor for suicide say the authors of a study of more than 8,500 people, drawn from Britain's extensive data base on psychiatric illness. The study appears in the October issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry (subscription required). An accompanying editorial places sex abuse in a constellation of other forms of domestic and/or community violence as well as substance abuse or mental illness. The British study found a higher suicide risk for females, although both males and females are affected. Previously published studies have also linked sex abuse of teenagers with risks for suicide.
