Last week New York State proposed a remedial plan to meet a judge's demand for appropriate, supported housing, for 4,300 people living in 28 segregated adult homes. The state proposed 1,000 supported housing apartments, developed over five years. New York said it would not force unwilling people into the more independent supported housing but also does not explain how many of 3,300 people whose interests were represented by the six-year old law suit are unaddressed. The law suit affirmed that conditions in New York adult homes, some of which housed more than 100 people, violated the Supreme Court's 1999 Olmstead v. L.C. decision. Advocates are angry with the state's response, calling it "paltry."
