Worldglobe(istock).jpgPsychiatric Services devotes the March issue to how most of the rest of the world grapples with treatment and consequences of mental illnesses. Topics span a broad range, from the public health response in Israel, where schools played "a significant role" for adolescents with an emotional or behavioral problem, to programs in Russia where people with mental illness are likely to be excluded from services.

In Finland, suicide and a 20% reduced life expectancy (most commonly from circulatory diseases) afflict people with schizophrenia; and in France, despite universal health care there is still inconsistent quality for homeless people needing psychiatric assistance. A question of continuing concern in the United States, ethicial and clinical implications of coerced treatment, is also under discussion in England where researchers examined perceptions of coercion with satisfaction of treatment.

Also in this issue are articles discussing South America, Canada, and South Africa where translating Xhosa, a language without an English equivalent for many symptoms, complicates all medical and mental health treatment.
