microphone(iStock).jpgA March teleconference about the media's impact on images of mental health, sponsored by SAMHSA was made available on their website. Otto Wahl, who teaches psychology at the University of Hartford and writes about stigma, discussed the consequences how negative media images alter attitudes. He referred to a recent study indicating that three of ten qualified candidates were turned down for a job after disclosing their history of mental illness. Wahl also said that today twice as many people associated mental illness with violence than in the 1950s. NAMI's director of media relations, Bob Carolla, talked about different strategies to engage change. Transcripts, slides, and audio include call-in comments.
