Phone answering machines are a barrier for people trying to make a follow-up appointment with a clinic for psychiatric services. A study from the University of Pennsylvania finds that two-thirds of those seen initially in an emergency room for depression did not speak to an appointment secretary when calling for a follow-up visit.
